Folktales describing the origin of vocal performance demonstrate how the traditional nurturer role held by women translates into every part of a woman's’ life. In earlier, traditional societies the perceived inferiority of women affected the respect musical women recieved. Since the male was considered dominant for so many years, including by many sexist individuals alive today, the work of women lacked respect, and therefore was not given the attention is deserved. Often, women who break it through the glass ceiling of the music industry, are seen by the public as articulate feminists, as many modern, female celebrities support the feminist movement and fight for women’s rights. The anti-leadership stance many musicians have, makes their position as some of the most notable feminists confusing to some, however, female musicians act as organizers as opposed to leaders. People are inspired and influenced by them and led by a political or religious figure. Music acts as a means to spread mass messages in a non-threatening way where other women can literally listen to the ideals and messages of the feminist movement easily. One notable time in history where musicians pushed the feminist movement forward is the “Riot Grrrl” movement, when artists like Ani DiFranco and Kathleen Hanna used their music to talk about an array of social issues, women’s rights being their main focus.
