Within the nation, Iowa is second with an average score of 22, but acquiring a higher score means being in a good position for scholarships and chances at a better college. Therefore oftenly most students will retake the test multiple times to improve their score, as do I. The first time I took the ACT’s was my sophomore year and I had not prepared for it before I took it. Therefore I received an average composition score of 21, with english being the main reason it was so low. Not only did I not study, but I stayed up late the night before the test with friends. Though I was not upset with my scores because my plan was to take it the first …show more content…
WIth my three strengths in English and Writing being Organization, Developing a Position, and Coherence. My strength in Organization is because I comprehend how to organize my ideas and how to introduce a paragraph so therefore the paper is not thrown all over the place. Organization can then be linked to coherence because if the paper is not organized then there is a high chance that the writer does not stay consistent throughout the paper. A writer has to develop a position, state it clearly and then be consistent with it, but to maintain that and to keep it comprehensible, organization is …show more content…
My weaknesses are Sentence Structure and Formation; Conventions of Usage; and Conventions of Punctuation. My weakness with Sentence Structure and Formation is sentence fragments and run-ons. Verb agreement is another topic off of Conventions of Usage that I have to improve in.That would be making sure the verb agrees with its subject when there is some text between the two. I wrote one “source-based argumentative essay” in high school: my final essay from sophomore English. The guidelines were to write a four to eight page paper on any topic of your choice, but the thesis of the paper had to come across clearly. At the time, my personal goals were to write about something no one else would, as well as get an A in the class. As a future collegiate writer, I feel as though I have the habits and potential strengths to be successful, but my biggest weakness is that I do not know how to write a professional essay and I am a reluctant editor.…

Self-assessments can often be intimidating, at least for myself. Time and again, they require us to honestly look in the mirror and face those skills that require growth. Although there was no great surprise of my weaker skills, I know it’s now time for me to overcome these challenges and use them as stepping stones. In Unit 2 self-assessment (Bethel University, 2014), my areas of improvement include writing, creative problem-solving, mathematics, critical thinking and reasoning, and reading.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

There are some scenarios where there are students who do poorly on the ACT but have a very bright future in college; on the other hand, there are some students who do excellent on the ACT but have a difficult time facing college-level classes. When all of it was said and done, the success all came down to grades. An alternate form of testing college readiness besides the ACT is simple - a student’s GPA. A former dean of Bates College, William Hiss, conducted a study to track the relationship between the two. He started by researching colleges who had “test optional” submissions where students could opt out of presenting their ACT test scores.…

Throughout my academic career, I have taken and been successful in a large number of English classes. In high school, my writing followed an academic format, mostly writing towards a prompt. Although I was able to gain writing practice, I never received a large amount of feedback that I could use to help myself in the future. Similarly, when I started college I practiced different forms of academic writing, structured around a prompt and focused on the end goal of a good grade. However, in college I was able to start gaining useful feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of my writing that I could apply to later assignments.…

As many high school upperclassmen begin the search for colleges, one of the biggest things a student will look at is whether or not they are up to par with the admissions requirements. Many factors play into these requirements such as grade point average (GPA), extracurricular activities, community involvement, maybe even an essay, however, the most daunting requirements for these students is the section that reads “Test Scores.” Standardized test scores are used to weed out applicants and scare off potential applicants whose scores are not up to par with the university standards. However, schools all around the country are beginning to drop the use of test scores in their admissions process.…
