Summary: This novel follows the travel between 14-year-old Johnny and Cush. The setting is set during the Civil War, in the state of Virginia. Johnny is a young man whose father is off to combat in the Civil War. He had work to do whilst he was in wait for his father's return. This was until his father arrived home too damaged to attribute to the household. His father eventually did pass of sickness and injury, and Johnny had to ensure his father that he would not go to fight or endanger himself. Johnny's family was impoverished, but he was bright though he wasn't in good wealth and set himself to work. He was to deliver rations and supplies with a group in Richmond, Virginia. On his way, he saw destruction and death. He was doing fine until he hears a gunshot behind him. A young black soldier chases after. Johnny tries to run, but is caught by the boy. The soldier has Johnny run away from the slave hunters. The soldier's name was Cush, and he himself was a runaway. Throughout the path they shared together, they fought and argued over political discourse. Johnny, born and bred in the south, first thought that there should be a preservation of slavery and servants serving their masters. Cush believed in the freedom of his people. Cush takes Johnny to war and has him disguised as a black boy. When the boys rise to battle, a bomb detonates. The bomb wounding Cush, Johnny realizes that he really doesn't hate Cush and wants him to live. He drags Cush to the nearby forest in his wagon and treats him. For the continuing days, they survived by hunting and pillaging. Cush is then captured, and the war ends with a treaty. Johnny finds Cush moments before they are to end his life and he convinces him that the war is over and there are no grounds to kill him. The story ends with the
