Witches Loves Analysis

Love can be a double edged sword. On one side the daydreaming and the restless nights thinking about them is wonderful. On the other end with rejection comes hardships and the feeling of depression. In the short short, “Witches Loves” by 0. Henry the author shows that jumping to conclusions fueled by love can lead to giving up on love and all feelings of love. Miss Martha’s sympathetic heart assumes everything about the man. For example, the man only bought stale bread, “Fresh bread was five cents a loaf. Stale ones were two cents for five loafs”(pg 1). Miss Martha realizes that this man only buys stale bread. With no confirmation she assumes he is poor and can’t afford fresh bread. Furthermore, Miss Martha starts to daydream about the man, “No doubt he lived in a garret, where he painted pictures and ate stale bread and thought of good things to eat in Miss Martha’s bakery,” (pg 1). Curious about the man Miss Martha puts two and two together. With no verbal confirmation she starts to map out this man’s job, financial situation, home, and even what he thinks about. For instance, She wasn't to help the man by, “backed with two thousand dollars in the bank, a bakery, and a sympathetic heart too”(pg2). A middle aged woman without a husband or kids longs for someone to care for. Someone to call their very own and to be alongside until death may do them apart. Furthermore, Miss Martha thought that, “he began to look thinner and discouraged. Her heart ached to add something good to eat” (pg2). Miss Martha”s sympathetic heart aches as she sees the love of her life becoming weaker and weaker. These could be the truth or not as love can distort someone's view.
