Mass hysteria is where your mind tricks you into thinking you need to do that for example in act three, the girls who told on other witches follow Abigail as she says, " I-I know not. A wind, a cold wind, has come." And one girl that has all girls follow says, "Your honor, I freeze"(108). While doing this they are all looking at Mary Warren, they accuse Mary as being the bad witch, and they do this because Mary is there with John Proctor confessing that the girls are evil and lying. During the testifying, Mary is asked to faint because she is accused of fainting just to faint. As she is asked to do this in act three, Mary says, " I-I used to faint because I-I thought I saw spirits"(107). That has to deal with mass hysteria because her mind thought she was seeing spirits and that is why she would faint, not because she wanted to but because that is what her mind tricked her to do. As they are sitting in court and Abigail is asked questions she stops and starts saying there is a bird, when in reality there is not, as Abigail sees the bird the girls say they start seeing the bird too. They claim the bird is Mary and also in act three, Abby says,"Oh please Mary! Don 't come down." Mary replies with, "She sees nothin"(115). In act three, Danforth comes to Proctor about why he is no longer coming to the church and if he is with witchery. As Danforth says,"You are in all respects a gospel Christian"(90). He says that because he knows Proctor is a good man to the church and that is his reputation but lately that he hasn 't come there is other thinkings. As John finds out that all the girls are in the cells for witchcraft he questions it and restates that how these girls have a good reputation and that the girls being accused aren 't actually witches. In act three John says, "So many of these women have lived so long with upright reputation"(91). He believes that since they have had good reputation they don 't deserve to be treated as if they are not a human being. One character that wants to have good reputation is Reverend Parris, as he brought in Abigail and her reputation is being ruined because of Elizabeth, she says, "She is blackening my name in the village"(act 1 pg.23). Elizabeth exposing Abigail 's name gives bad reputation to Parris because he is housing her, as he also says in act one, "I have sought here three long years... When some good respect is rising... You compromise my very character"(11). Parris cares so much about he looks on the outside because he is a Reverend and can 't be judged. He must show good reputation to the town, so that people of his church come and support him.
