Harper Lee wrote the stunning novel To Kill A Mockingbird during a time in the United States that was tragic. In the South, if you were not white or rich you had no rights. African-Americans were discriminated every single day. Citizens of the South did not trust black men. White men believed that African-Americans just wanted to steal your money and rape your women and children. This was an awful stereotype, and sadly, it still can be found in America today. To Kill A Mockingbird brought to life the injustices of the South towards Negroes. Harper Lee’s book brought about the revolution that turned into the civil rights movement. The novel takes places in the state of Alabama, one of the most racist states in the South. Atticus’ morals set a standard for the reader and seem to be the only thing that makes sense in the novel. Atticus made Jem read to Mrs. Dubose everyday to teach them about real courage. This quote is something that Martin Luther King Jr. would say. It is possible to change the world and be fearless without violence. For a white man during this time, Atticus was defying the code of laws in the South. If a Southerner did not own a gun, they were often found to be called weaklings. By Atticus’ conduct, however, he gained the respect of people throughout the entire state of Alabama by the good example he set for others. Overall, this is what Atticus wanted his children to
