Winton Woods Speech Analysis

Improved Essays
Weeks away from the start of my senior year, I was asked to proffer a speech to a culmination of faculty members, many of whom I have known for the better part of my existence. It was requested that I speak on my vision and purpose of the Winton Woods District, and how it has afforded me a wealth of opportunities that will forever be stitched into the fabric of who I am. Immediately, I seized the chance to describe to a couple hundred educators exactly what they signed up to be a part of. Winton Woods and its teachers are concerned with more than a curriculum scripted across a syllabus that is to be approved by the state or a profiting institution. Winton Woods is more than a homogenous body of students work solely on building a resume that

Review of Sable Schultz’s Public Speaking Presentation On November 3, 2016 I went and listened to public speaker, Sable Schultz. Schultz spoke about on the transgender experience at the Community College of Aurora in the Rotunda. This paper critiques Shultz’s speech in terms of: her engagement with her audience, use of power point, gestures and body movement, style, disfluencies, organization, as well as her introduction, main points, body, stance, manner, conclusion, and her overall performance. To cut to the chase, after reviewing Mrs. Shultz’s speech, it must be said that she is a bit below average as a speaker. While her manner was genuine and authentic, she was not particularly captivating.…

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

Civil right’s movements often cause a variety of strong and influential leaders to come to light. Florence Kelley was a strong and influential leader during the Women’s Civil Rights movement; she spoke at the National American Women’s Suffrage Association in 1905 to persuade in favor of change for the greater and common good. In her speech, Kelley utilizes pathos, anaphora, and connotative diction to convey her claim that the injustices of child labor can be reformed by women attaining political power (such as the right to vote) and that it is their moral obligation to do so. Throughout her entire speech, Kelley applies pathos to inspire sympathy, feelings of guilt , and appeal to maternal instincts.…

    Shortt's Speech Analysis

After listening to Shortt’s speech I would classify him as both an activist and an artist. Although he strongly believes he is not engaging social change, his persuasion on altering the idea on loitering has me thinking otherwise. During his presentation he really wanted to connect with the audience to gather their interpretation of the word loitering. He mentioned a few times that he felt the word “loiter” is too broad and needs to be clearer on the meaning when it is posted on signs and that was part of the reason why he began this project. The focus on the project is to encourage others to loiter with a purpose and also altering the publics perception of the word.…

As I stepped through the doors of the Stillwater City Hall at 6:30pm on September 24th, there was a pleasant chatter amongst the members of the school board and the citizens gathered there to be informed and involved. It was a welcoming, yet structured atmosphere and I began to be intrigued by issues and events that were going to be addressed that night. The Stillwater Area Public School Board’s mission is to “assure all students are provided opportunity to reach their maximum potential”(Stillwater Area Public Schools). This group meets once a month and there are 7 School Board members along with two Student Board members.…

Dr. Misty Wilke came as a speaker in our transcultural class to spread some light on the Native American Culture and their practices. While doing this she hoped to clear out any stereotyping and assumptions the students already have made about the Native American culture. As a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians in North Dakota, Dr. Wilke had some great stories and explanations to how and why the Native American culture practices certain things that others find odd. Influence on my Thinking…

Although a region may perceive their roots to be unwavering, powerful acts can crack even the most established ideals. From the suffragette who stepped on the tracks of a horse race for women’s rights, to the man who suffered a bullet wound fighting for civil rights, to the student protestors who risked the unknown for the chance at a better future, powerful and sacrificial acts have drastically altered the regions in which we live. These tactics may seem unconventional, but according to author Lewis Mumford, all unconventional ideas are born from convention. In his speech titled Excerpts from the South in Architecture, Mumford argues that every idea has blossomed from and coexists with a previous idea. He emphasizes this coexistence as the…

I don’t know where to begin. After watching Adaptation and reading Kaufman 's speech, I’m overwhelmed by ideas and thoughts. These ideas and thoughts are not only on creativity and screenwriting, which is what I expected them to be, but also about myself as an individual in the world. I don’t consider myself a writer, to be honest, I really don’t like to write, never have. The strange thing is, I’ve always considered myself a storyteller.…

In her speech, The Ultimate Gift, Jennifer Conrad attempts to use Monroe’s Motivational Sequence in her speech to convince her classmates to donate blood regularly. She utilizes statistics and an anecdote to bring her point home. She provides the students with a clear way for them to help. Unfortunately, her condescending tone, lack of sensitivity towards a diverse audience, and lack of source citations reduced the effectiveness of her speech Overall I would not consider Ms. Conrad’s delivery effective.…

Most inspirational words are given by people with great knowledge that have graduated from the highest colleges in America. Although this is not the case for Mick Ebeling’s. Most of his speeches include the saying everything that is possible now was at one point impossible, therefore everything that is impossible now will be possible in the future. Although his words are very strong and powerful Mick has a degree in political science, and is an American film, television and commercial executive producer, author, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. These may seem like an average person in the field of political science, but his words, actions, and uncontrolled compassion for others is very out of the ordinary.…

It is through our students that world change must occur and that differences among all individuals may be respected. It is within the realm of educators to create an improved society for our future. To reiterate, “If Americans are to demonstrate pluralistic attitudes, educators must teach all students about diversity” (Koppelman, 2014, p. 175). Jackson/Madison County Schools makes a commitment to create a curriculum and environment based on pluralistic attitudes and to provide the necessary costs and arrangements to achieve the district’s goals. It is through these practices and this position that educators will teach students the mindset needed to contribute to society and to be successful in a world outside of the school system.…

    Wineberg Teaching History

Wineberg goes on to discuss dispositions of teachers and methods that successful teachers use to teach history. In one classroom, an increase in student participation was accompanied by responses of increasing complexity, which denotes a more nuanced historical perspective and critical thinking. He notes that “historical understanding is an interdisciplinary enterprise, and nothing less than a multidisciplinary approach will approximate its complexity” (Wineburg, 52) I agree wholeheartedly to that. After reading this chapter, I’m left with more evidence to support some of my feelings on teaching.…
