Seniors Last Shot at Winter Sports

Winter sports are just beginning here at GHS. From varsity basketball to varsity winter track, students have been dedicated themselves toward having a successful season. Perhaps the most devoted players are the seniors, who have been working especially hard to leave Greenport with a good athletic legacy.
Dribbling up and down the court, slam dunking their way to victory, the girls varsity basketball team have been a force to be reckon with. Between the teams group effort and the outstanding leadership from the senior captains, Toni Esposito, Madison Tabor, and Katie Tuthill, there is lot to be expected of their team. Started by Mike Gunther and senior Emelys Villareal, the varsity winter track has attracted a sizable amount of students eager to train for events such as long distance and shot-put. Boys Winter track team captain, senior Adolfo Merino-Romano, could not be more proud of what the boys have made of themselves. When asked about the teams standing at the moment, Merino-Romano declared, “We’re family. When one wins, we all win. We all learn from each other, there is no such thing as a captain--there is a leader.” The girls varsity track team captain, senior Emelys Villareal, is also very proud of the accomplishments and commitments the girls have put in at practices and meets. “All the girls are super hard-working and devote a lot of time. Everyone has a lot of potential to do great,” says Villareal.
Yet another GHS winter sport is varsity cheerleading; from cheering on every essential move of the basketball team, to hyping up the audience in the bleachers, the cheer squad knows to excite a crowd. Cheerleader captain, senior Maia Mazzaferro, proclaimed, “This season is going very well so far. We have many new girls who are bringing so much enthusiasm to the squad. Everyone is positive, willing to learn, and making great efforts to be the best they can be. This will definitely be an awesome
