Winter Dreams Literary Analysis

A family either has the ability to be happy or to not be happy. Happiness, whether granted or earned, should be sought within family, not money or elsewhere. Dependence on practical and emotional support ordinarily lands upon family. It provides a state of comfort that leads to happiness. Reminiscing through the plethora of memories a family has built together also provides the same well-being. The state of comfort and dependency is what connects a family to happiness. The classic, stereotypical family is happy and merry. In the short story "Winter Dreams" written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dexter Greene settles on a woman who has the ability to raise a family. This woman is Irene Scheerer, an unfaltering and steady housewife who is a proficient mother. Rather than being with the girl he was truly captivated by, Judy Jones, Dexter Greene he chose to Marry Irene. Even after marrying her, Dexter still had a strong desire for Judy. The character did not have a potential family because he was insatiable in his marriage. Margaret Garner is known as the famous African American who attempted to kill her own children for a happier life as an alternative to being a slave. Garner's intention was to kill her children to save them from working as slaves and subsequent to the killing, take her own life. Garner wanted her kids to have a normal life, but the most she could give them was a universe where slavery was nonexistent. Death, in Garner's point of view, was the only way to happiness. She protected her family and reached out for happiness. Ultimately, Garner's plan fell apart and failed because she was caught before she could kill her other two children. Chances of anyone relating to Garner's story are very slim, but many can understand her reasoning for the utmost
