Winter Break: The Pacemaker

When we came back from Winter Break, the clock in Mrs. Allen's room was a few hours behind. It had tricked her into believing that instead of being the last hour of the day, it was actually around lunchtime. Now that the clock is fixed—well, partially fixed, still being an hour behind—, it is now working properly again. A pacemaker is very similar to this. Think of the heart as the clock and the pacemaker as the remedy that fixes the clock. Like the clock still being an hour behind, the pacemaker doesn't completely fix the heart, but it partially fixes the heart to make is function properly.

The pacemaker only consists of a few parts that work together to operate the heart’s muscles and control the heart’s speed. The three parts are called the generator, the lead, and the electrodes. The generator, which is like the central command of the pacemaker, generates electrical pulses. The generator contains a battery that is expected to last up to 10 years and then will need to be replaced. The leads are wire-like pieces that are inserted into a vein that leads into a chamber of

Older adults already have many hardships that have come with age. They could be suffering from arthritis, cancer, injuries, or many other diseases, and the pacemaker is the only thing keeping them going. Also, they could have gone through depression due to the death of a husband or wife and not be motivated to live without their loved one. To deactivate the pacemaker, a magnet is held over the generator of the pacemaker, which will shut it down. After the pacemaker is shut down, it can cause symptoms that will eventually lead to death, or immediately cause death. Families may decide that it is best that their struggling family member to have their pacemaker disabled because they don't want to see them have to struggle through life with a
