Winter Break Paragraph

Working on winter break. What a torturous task to go through. While everyone is at home relaxing and spending time with family you’re working nonstop on your feet and watching the clock until you can leave. I sat down with my Dad and interviewed him about his high school experience. He went on and spoke about how he went to football games,6 flags, and work. Growing up in a lower income neighborhood defined him as a person and made him have a positive outlook on life despite the situation he was in. He also had to work a lot, working 2 jobs at once and still balancing academics all at once. What stood out to me was his story about his winter break. Normally when you hear the words winter break, you think of Christmas, gifts, and everyone's …show more content…
He rolled out of bed and dragged himself out of the bedroom and proceeded to the bathroom. The normal routine for him, brush your teeth in the old sink, take a shower in the porcelain tub, eat breakfast at the rectangular table, and getting everything ready for school. The rest of his brothers slowly waking up while he zips up his coat and gets ready to leave the undersized, overpriced apartment in the grimy, unsettling city called Jersey City. He looks at the fraying calendar from school that hung up on the rustiest nail ever known to man. December 20th, 1990. In big bold italic letters spelled WINTER BREAK. It spanned across the following days. Under the words WINTER BREAK in red pen wrote, “Help out at store” which also spanned out across the following days. This was the 1st time he had to work a full day on winter …show more content…
It's snowing out so there must be people who need hats. As they wait outside, the bustling streets are no longer covered in light, fresh snow. Instead, the ground is packed to the ground and the gutters are filled with disgusting, brown slush caked in the sewage grate. As their dad locks the store and pulls down the old, steel, security fence, a must-have in crime ridden Chinatown where shop robberies are common. The 3 brothers stare up at the world trade center, which is barely visible in the grey, smog filled air. As they walk they continue to stare at the mountainous grey buildings and gleamed over as the 2 towers slice through the sky and soars over the buildings. The smell of smoke, car fumes, and chinese food combine for a stomach turning feeling. Chinatown was known to be one of the most dirty known places to man whether you're standing outside or sitting inside a restaurant, everyone knew the air stunk and there's nothing to be happy about walking through chinatown on a cold winter day. As they enter into to the distribution center, a makeshift warehouse filled with palettes of good they get another whiff of cigarette ash and motor oil. Yuck. One of the brothers gagged. The stench was so bad that even a fly wouldn’t dare come in. They trot through the aisle and heave the storage container of hats

In the exact place the Twin Towers used to be is now a waist-high wall outlining the place of each of the towers; with a deep, square hole in the middle; and a waterfall into the ground as far down as I could see. On the top face of the short walls are written the names of all those who lost their lives in the attack. The names are grouped by floor they worked on in the towers or the plane they were in. As I stood there, gazing at the place where so many had lost their lives, I couldn’t help but feel that I wasn’t emotional enough for the situation. Others around me were crying and hugging.…
