Winston Churchill's Ruining Britain

have a new face representing Britain. Winston Churchill was appointed Prime Minister, by King George on the 10th, at 6:00 pm. this major event happened due to the former Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, resigning. It is a grand shock to be sure, since Chamberlain had won the winning vote. Although this isn’t a direct quote, here is the reason he left office, ”he recognized the need to allow a new Prime Minister to form a National Government, in which all the political Parties would be represented”

Though this was a very exciting event, many haven’t been too excited. The day they announced that Churchill was the Prime Minister, I was out for dinner with some friends, and remember some people cheered. However, many groaned saying that Churchill would ruin Britain, and that he was “A disaster”.

In his book, “Supreme Command,” Eliot Cohen deviates from this normalcy theory by arguing that active statesmen make the best wartime leaders, pushing their military subordinates to succeed where they might have failed if left on their own. According to Cohen civilian intervention at both strategic and operational levels was essential for military success. While Cohen’s account of civil-military relations in both Winston Churchill and Abraham Lincoln supports his general argument of supreme command, I find Churchill’s case more supportive based on the way he…

feel a sense that they have to protect their homes and they have a responsibility towards their country. An example where Churchill combined both pathos and logos at once is “Against this loss of over 30,000 men, we can set a far heavier loss certainly inflicted upon the enemy. But our losses in material are enormous. We have perhaps lost one-third of the men we lost in the opening days of the battle of 21st March, 1918, but we have lost nearly as many guns -- nearly one thousand-and all our transport, all the armored vehicles that were with the Army in the north.” Churchill in this example by using statistics he made things more realistic to the audience and he triggered the emotions of his audience as well.…

The speech was effective in both summarizing the recent events in France, describing on what ground Britain stands upon proceeding into the war, and instilling hope and a defensive pugnacity into the heads and hearts of British citizens.
