Winnie The Pooh: Character Analysis

Growing up, Winnie the Pooh was always a source of comfort for anyone I knew. My mom read the books to my sister and I; we watched the movies; I affectionately called my best friend Winston Winnie. As I became older, I learned of the theory that each character is a representation of a mental disorder. I had always identified myself with Piglet because I was small, generally timid, and my favorite color was pink. Sure enough, into my seventh grade year I began to express characteristics of anxiety, along with depression. Eeyore is the character with major depressive disorder, a diagnosis I've battled for the last four years. The rest of my class seemed so judgmental, and even if I was considered mature, I knew no underclassman would accept me as an equal. I had to keep faith, so I adopted a mantra from Eeyore, or A. A. Milne; "Weeds are flowers too, once you get to know them." I prayed that I would be able to express myself so that others would see me for who I was, not for my awkwardness and mental illness. To my surprise, it worked. I joined marching band and found my niche. My new friends were bubbly and aspired for high achievements. Even better, several of them also struggled with depression, so they could understand me and offer support rather than abandoning me in my times of need. I thrived. I dropped most of the Eeyore from my life with the assistance of Zoloft. I looked for the good in everyone, trying to see each person as a flower and not a weed. On bad days, I would bring flowers to school or bake cookies and pass them out to those who looked sad, so I could see their flowery smiles replace the weeds of their frowns. Searching for good in other people helped me to find the good in me, and built up my low self-esteem. I often wish I could ship some of my Prozac to Eeyore and tell him how much he helped

Winnie-the-Pooh offers an assessment of his abilities and his personality that also reflect a larger view of the archetype: the innocent youth. Milne offers his reader subtle hints of Pooh’s personality when he says, “He could see the honey. He could smell the honey. But he couldn’t reach the honey.” (Milne 14) Milne’s repetition and use of the anaphora is key to understanding Pooh and his charisma.…

“A paranoid is someone who knows little of what’s going on” (William S. Burroughs). This quote by William S. Burroughs describes Piglet, a small and frightened character from Winnie-the-Pooh, perfectly. More often than not, Piglet is remembered for his paranoia, but where does his paranoia stem from? Piglet is also often found walking Pooh through thoughts and actions with a series of questions, but why does he decide this is the best way to teach Pooh about the world? Piglet is derived from two main philosophers: Socrates and Kant.…
