Windshield Survey Report

Interviews with key informants reveal health issues that are not apparent during the windshield survey. One health issue described by KR RN, BSN Coordinator of Health Services Laura Bush Middle School (personal communication, August 13, 2015) is failure to receive all required vaccinations. She indicates that many parents believe their child is placed at risk by vaccinating. Many parents choose not to vaccinate their children, or to stagger vaccinations so that they are not received according to the recommended schedule (personal communication, August 13, 2015). School aged children account for 30% of observed individuals in the area around Rush Elementary school. He describes an active watch program that posts safety updates to a private Facebook page. The homeowners post photos and video from security cameras along with descriptions of any suspicious activity they observe. The use of home security is apparent during the survey, and many of the adults encountered in Rushland Park notice an unusual vehicle. KR shared that one of the biggest strengths in the community is parental involvement at school (personal communication, August 13, 2015). Parents are very interested in the curriculum and social activities at school. Parents make up a large part of the school’s volunteer force and contribute greatly to the school’s many activities.
