The wind up is the first key phase of the throw. It occurs when the athlete positions themselves side on to the target. The main purpose of this phase is so the body can get into a rhythm which will make it easier for the throwing action to be more efficient. At the start of the wind up the athletes feet should be shoulder width apart and should be side on to the target. The athlete then extends their knee and strides outwards. This helps to develop momentum which is used in later stages of the throwing motion. This particular phase doesn’t put a lot of strain on the body.
Cocking
The stage of cocking first begins when the throwing arm moves backwards and starts to extend at the elbow joint. To start, the humerus is abducted and then extended. The movement of flexion is then created at the elbow. The movement of extension then occurs at the hip and knee and plantarflexion occurs in the ankle. The center of gravity of the athlete’s body is lowered due to the knees and hip flexing.
The final part of cocking begins when the front leg hits the ground.

In particular a pitcher. This is because out of all the positions on a baseball team they generate the most speed and power from their throws. I also chose baseball pitchers as my ideal athlete because the mechanics of pitching a baseball is one of the most researched and documented motor skills in sports.
Slide Five
The ideal technique. As you can see from the picture the ideal technique that I found is from a skeleton. The two key things that make it the ideal technique in my opinion is in the second phase it has a nice wide base stride and its center of gravity is nice and low. The second thing is in the third phase. As you can see the skeleton has created a lot of elastic force at its elbow joint. This is where the main source of power is created when throwing a ball.
