Wind Ensemble Spring Concert Report

Ever since I was a young boy, music has been a very prominent part of my life. My parents believed being involved in musical performances and fine arts events were just as important as sports or anything of that sort. I can’t thank them enough for inputting this view into my life as it has given me a true appreciation for music, theatre, and any other live presentation of the arts. For some, attending a live performance could be a drag, but to me it is quite the opposite. Tuesday at the Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall was no exception as I attended the recital for Iowa State’s Wind Ensemble Spring Concert. The concert began with suspense and thrill as the ensemble played “Danzon No. 2” I felt as though I was watching the opening credits of a James Bond film when the musicians began playing. The length of this song was close to 35 minutes. I, along with many of the other audience member began to become disengaged as the final piece seemed to not have an end. Besides the two songs that I did not enjoy, my overall reaction to this recital was one of enjoyment. I love to see the timing within a large group performance and all the pieces coming together to form one great masterpiece. Even the small things like the bass humming deeply or tinkle of a triangle add key elements to make the group as a whole sound much better. There was one special moment in the concert when a piece composed by Zach Plata, a former Iowa State student was performed for the first time and he was in attendance to see his work come to life. He was brought to stage at the conclusion of the song and was given a thunderous applause by the audience. In conclusion, there were some ups and downs to this concert, but I was glad I chose to attend this particular performance. However it was difficult to analyze the performers in this recital, which increased the challenge of writing this
