1. Introduction
South Dakota has enormous potential for wind energy development. Due to the fact that South Dakota with it great plains are an ideal site for wind farms since the plains have smooth hill tops that can catch prevailing winds. This is why South Dakota ranks sixth in the United States for potential in generating more electricity from wind. As of today South Dakota produces 26 percent of their electricity from wind. We have the potential to double this amount if South Dakota produces more wind farms. South Dakota is mostly made up of farm land and the farmers struggle to economically stability. Wind turbines operate on a simple principle; the force of the winds called “lift” pushes the blades of a wind turbine up, allowing it to turn the blades around a rotor. The rotor is connected to the main shaft which spins the gearbox whose gears convert the relatively slow rotation of the spinning blades into higher speed motion, turning the drive shaft quickly enough to power the electricity generator to create electricity.

An offshore wind turbine produces an average amount of 3.6 Megawatts of power a year, this amount of power is enough to power 3,312 households with electricity.
The way wind farms have achieved this much success with energy production is by precise planning and design. With wind turbines the location planning is a key factor that can either improve the overall energy production or be the reason why the wind turbine produces no energy at all. The source for wind energy wind is naturally occurring, and originates from the nuclear fusion processes that take place on the sun. As long as we have the sun we have power. Also harnessing wind energy can be done almost anywhere. Another reason to have wind turbines is that the cost for electricity goes down; South Dakotans’ price for electricity averaged 9.06 cents per kilowatt hour in 2014 across all sectors, compared to the national average of 10.45 cents per kilowatt hour with the use of wind
