The Winchester Mystery House is one of California's most interesting attractions. Rumors say the owner built the house to confuse evil spirits and appease pleasant spirits. During the 1900's it was estimated to cost five million dollars to construct but no one knows the true value of the house today. You can now tour the house and decide for yourself if the house is truly haunted.
Sarah Winchester was married to William Winchester; son of the inventor of the repeating rifle. The couple lost their infant daughter to a protein deficiency disease. Fifteen years later, Sarah lost her husband to tuberculosis and fell into a deeper depression. She inherited her husband's money and stocks in the Winchester Company. Winchester bought a farmhouse in San Jose, California that had eight rooms built upon empty farmland. She hired carpenters and gardeners to start construction immediately. The staff worked day in and day out; completing the plans as Mrs. Winchester requested for over three decades. Some rooms were made to be very exquisite, decorated with imported and rare furniture. However, there were also columns installed upside down, windows and doors of all different sizes and stairs that go right up to the ceiling. If any of the staff questioned or refused Mrs. Winchester's requests, they were fired. On the other hand, the loyal staff were paid one and a half times the minimum wage and received praise for a job well done.
Mrs. Winchester died in her sleep in 1922 and construction finally ceased. Her family has never come forward to explain the oddities about the house or her character. Today, you can tour the Winchester Mystery House almost year round. Tourists have captured orbs and shadows in pictures that they feel are evidence of haunting spirits.
