However, the one thing Troy learned from him was working to survive. Even though Troy was not fond of what his father had done to him, which eventually led to him running away, Troy still emphasized the one thing he learned from his father to Cory. Troy believed Cory should not be playing football because he had no future in it, and that Cory should get a job and work so he could make a living. Troy disagrees with Cory when he states, “I told that boy about that football stuff. The white man ain’t gonna let him get nowhere with that football. I told him when he first came to me with it. Now you come telling me he did go and got more tied up in it. He ought to go and get recruited in how to fix cars or something where he can make a living.”(Wilson 8). Troy has numerous arguments and conflicts with his family members because of his conduct towards them. The only reason Troy treats his family this way is because of his experiences with his father. Troy supposes that discrimination is still strong because of how it affected him years ago, when in reality Troy is just too stubborn to realize that times are changing. In the text, Wilson talks about Troy’s beliefs in the world, and how people should get through life and survive. Wilson also shows Troy’s childhood, which was very strenuous because of his father, and the hardships Troy encountered throughout his whole life while he was growing older. Troy is stubborn and does not believe in progression. Throughout the play, Troy goes from being a family man to being lonely and having very deficient relationships with all of his family members due to how Troy treated them more from mistakes he had made. The primary cause of his actions was his father and his strenuous childhood.
