Wilson Disease is also known as Hepatolendicular Degeneration. “Wilson Disease (WD) is an autosomal recessive disorder that results in accumulation of copper in the liver as a consequence of mutations in the gene encoding the copper- transporting P-Type ATPASE (ATP7B)” (Wooton-Kee et al.,2015). Wilson Disease is inherited and begins between the early mid ages, affecting very few people. This disease is not common and is a very rare disease. Wilson disease starts as a result of copper poisoning of the body cells and organs. Wilson disease keeps the body from removing excess copper. The body needs a small amount of copper from the foods we take in to stay healthy and continue functioning properly. If the liver does not remove the excess of copper, the liver does not filter properly causing copper to build up in the liver, eyes, brain and other important organs. …show more content…
If any copper is found in the brain and liver it can very well cause serious damage to the body and lead to death as well. Liver disease is the initial feature of Wilson disease. The liver is the largest organ and is responsible for many organs within the human body. There are many signs and symptoms to this disease the conditions are evident in the liver at the time of birth. There is treatment to prevent reacccumalation of copper.
