Excerpt from Brain Jack by Brian Falkner: “‘Why suddenly self-destruct when you’ve already won?’” (165). I chose this excerpt because of its simplistic but yet meaningful message. It conveys a message to people who are having or hardships or issues within their life. It basically means that a person should not become stressed out or depressed about issues because in the eventually, that person is going to succeed.…
The first person in “Hoop Dreams” who’s dreams came true and never gave up was Sheila. In the middle of the story, Sheila was taken off welfare and was determined to become a nurse, She went back to school and finally fulfilled her lifetime dream of becoming a nurse. Sheila scored the highest in her class for nursing. Sheila was head strong and knew what was expected when she joined the nursing class. She knows she needed the money to help with the kids and to put food on the table every night.…
Perseverance is essential for success in this world. This is what I think the authors of the two books I read were trying to tell the readers in their stories, ‘The Giver’ by Lois Lowry and ‘Legend’ by Marie Lu. In these stories the characters, Day and Jonas, however very different, are, like many things much more similar than you think. Jonas rebels against the ‘government’ in the community. He wants everyone to have memories and see color.…
The obstacles and challenges that life presents can strengthen the will or defeat the spirit. There are many great individuals in this world whom have crumbled under the weight of their genius but there are also a large number of great individuals whom excelled under the pressure of their success. Theodore Roosevelt was one of those individuals who rolled with life’s punches and asked for a second helping. Most of us know Theodore Roosevelt as “Teddy”, a tough native New Yorker who spoke of the West African proverb “Speak softly and carry a big stick”, but not many of us know that Theodore was plagued with severe sicknesses as a young child. Theodore faced many challenges throughout his life but continued to strive forward through the storm…
Mikayla Holtz Pd. 9 Shaping of a President: Franklin D. Roosevelt There are obstacles in life, that must be overcome in order to succeed. What does it take to succeed after failure? Failure is something that can break someone down and make them want to give up, but that should never be the answer.…
This quote inspires me to endure any hardships I experience for two reasons: it reminds me that there could be more difficult events I could face, and that my reward for enduring it will be a meaningful life experience. Because everyone experiences hardships in life, I can look at this quote and be reassured that I am not the only one with a certain problem, but I am also convinced that many people live through more severe events and therefore I can definitely withstand whatever life may give me. When I look at this quote, I recall all my past troubles and, more importantly, what I learned from those. The quote is similar in message to the “hang in there!”…
“Don’t allow your past or present condition to control you. It’s just a process that you’re going through to get you to the next level.” — T.D. Jakes. This quote means that you can’t let your current condition control your future. When I read this quote an example that I think of is school.…
Helen Keller once believed that “The struggle of life is one of our greatest blessings. It makes us patient, sensitive, and Godlike. It teaches us that although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.” This is important to know, because the struggle for freedom will lead you to wisdom and progress. Struggle and suffering can lead to wisdom and progress due to learning from your mistakes and realizing that you made a mistake in the first place.…
90 percent of white people have almost no concept of the “struggle” that African Americans face today. African Americans struggle for freedom was then and still remains today. The black community continue to play a strategic role in the fight for progress. Struggle means to strive to achieve or attain something in the face of difficulty. A person who never had financial problems or never had their freedom strip for them, cannot experience growth due to the fact they never been through a struggle.…
Who knew that, on June 23, 1940, a legend would be born? But, more importantly, who knew that, in 1960, an inspiration would be made? That legend and inspiration was an Olympic sprinter by the name of Wilma Glodean Rudolph. When Wilma was an infant when she contracted polio, which led to paralysis in her legs. Even though the odds were never in her favor, Rudolph put herself to the test and went on to win three gold medals in various track events at the 1960 Rome Olympics.…
We have read many passages and a book about sports and how they can relate to life. Iris’s quote on how suffering helps us become closer to happiness and how it also teaches us about wanting the right things is a quote that can be related to real life and characters we have read about. The quote for me is true, to a certain extent since in our readings we can see a lot of struggle and having the right idea to want the right thing but we find ourselves not seeing them happy. So the quote may be true but it can also be seen as not true.…
Turning Determination into Success “If you try and lose then it isn't your fault. But if you don't try and we lose, then it’s all your fault.” This is a perfect quote from Scott Orson Card’s novel Ender’s Game. Ender’s game is based on a strong, intelligent, young boy who is taken from his family to train in a position that is meant to save the world. Almost the whole book surrounds around the abuse Ender endures to become this warrior.…
Jim Murphy’s book Inner Excellence intrigues me because it breaks down how the mind works. Often times people sell themselves short on life goals or wonder why they aren’t happy once they reach their goal. Various techniques are shown throughout the book to help to assess your mental wellbeing. This book shows you how to become mentally tough and apply it to any aspect of life: business, school, athletic, or casual. Success is the ultimate goal in life, but how much of success is mental?…
“Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” Horace is telling us that, with difficulties has the effect to draw out from someone a reaction to one’s natural abilities or skills, in flourishing financially relevant to an event past would have lie in a deep sleep. This quote, that horace stated, is inspiring because he is telling us as not a reader, but as a person. That making, who you want to be, is your decision nobody else's. It's your character you're in command.…
