Charlie and the Chocolate Factory narrates a story that Mr. Willy Wonka, who is the owner of the greatest chocolate factory in the world, has decided to open the doors of his factory to five lucky children and their parents. The way Mr. Williy Wonka chose the five lucky children is hiding five golden tickets beneath the wrappers of the chocolate bars. Danny Elfman, who has been influenced by The Day the Earth Stood Still, creates the soundtrack in this film. The Day the Earth Stood Still is the beginning of electronic music; thus, Elfman’s works in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory share the components of electronic music as well. With the scene that five lucky children and their parents walked walked into the gate of the chocolate factory, the song “Wonka’s Welcome Song” begins right after Mr. Willy Wonka said “Welcome to the chocolate factory, and who am I, well…” (Youtube video, 2015). The song conveys the emotions by lyrics and tone. It not only presents the happy working attitudes of the workers in the chocolate factory, but also makes an introduction of William Wonka with the lyrics. The lyrics of “Wonka’s Welcome Song” praise the characteristics of Wonka, which are modest, clever and so smart (Youtube video, 2015). The instruments used in this piece of music include bells, trumpet, and flute. “The significant difference between the silent and sound scenes is the use of music”(Hickman, 2006, pg. 113). Also, the creating of the sound music is one of the significant steps in the field of film industry. By using the music in the film, it conveys the joyful of William Wonka when he met the five lucky children and their parents. Without the conversations among the characters, the scores in the film can present lots of information about the characters and backgrounds as well. Moreover, both songs generate the audience’s emotions and show the character’s emotions. The “Wonka’s Welcome Song” largely presents William Wonka’s excitement of opening his factory and inviting children to the chocolate factory. It also stimulates the audiences to be excited about starting the journey in the chocolate factory. One the other hand, the “Augustus Gloop” shows that Augustus suffers his greed in the factory: while sucking from the chocolate river, he falls in and is sucked up by one of the super pipes.
