For example, a long shot is used on Jack in The Nightmare before Christmas as he is trudging through the cemetery in Halloween town; this shows his dissatisfaction in the gloomy and chilling environment. However, moviegoers see his whole demeanor as an outcast change as he realizes not all people or worlds behave as his former subjects had. A long shot is also utilized as a technique for insignificance in Edward Scissorhands as Kim walks up the stairs in Edward’s castle. This shows Edward’s former home as an outcast and how he was always the gentle giant the audience knew him to be even though his home proved otherwise. Both examples from Burton’s creepy classics further exhaust the truth that oftentimes, the loneliest fellows are the most…

Do you think I am trying to weave a spell? Perhaps I am; but remember your fairy tales. Spells are used for breaking enchantments as well as for inducing them. And you and I have need of the strongest spell that can be found to wake us from the evil enchantment of worldliness which has been laid upon us for nearly a hundred years. Almost our whole education has been directed to silencing this shy, persistent, inner voice; almost all our modern philosophies have been devised to convince us that the good of man is to be found on this earth.…

Willpower is the mental equivalent to strength. Magicals use willpower to perform magic, but not all spell require willpower. An example is the Wand-Lightening charm, willpower isn't really required to perform it, while the Fire-Making requires willpower to get it to work. One must use caution because the more will you put into spells, the more violent the backfire could be. Will power can be equated to pushing a box, except it is all mental.…

One topic that always seems to catch my eye is addiction. According to American Society of Addiction Medicine, Addiction is characterized by inability to consistently abstain, impairment in behavioral control,Addiction craving, diminished recognition of significant problems with one’s behaviors and interpersonal relationships, and a dysfunctional emotional response. Typically, people believe that drug addiction is a choice and that anyone who does it is lacking willpower and is just a typical “junkie”. I decided to argue this assumption and find deeper reasonings as to why people are addicted to specifically drugs and/or activities and why they are unable to discontinue their use. However, most have never considered the fact that it could be…

I thought the Survey of Character Strengths was an interesting survey to take. My first and second strengths were not particularly surprising to me, however my third was not what I necessarily expected it to be, but I am certainly not unhappy with it. All three strengths are values I have always admired because I have grown up watching my parents and older siblings showcase all three. I have consciously tried to emulate their example regarding these strengths and it was intriguing and encouraging to see all three show up in the survey. I was glad to see which strength showed up as my top, as kindness and generosity are especially important to me.…

The Chiaroscuro Effect When generally speaking, light is associated with good and darkness with evil. Light uncovers the truth and reflects a warm enlightening period. Darkness, on the other hand, reflects a gothic tone and confusion. In Great Expectations, the two symbols are controversially used to depict and evoke certain reactions. Pip is often enlightened within the presence of artificial lighting which leads to an even greater state of darkness, or confusion, for him.…
