In my rhetorical essay on, On Writing Well, by William Zinsser I tried my best write an essay to effectively show my reader in what I believed. In this essay I wrote how I thought William Zinsser was very effective in proving and demonstrating his points to his readers. I went into talking about how he involved some of his points through his own writing and as he did was very effective. As I wrote my essay, I included quotes and examples that Zinsser used through the book, to show prove of what I would state and why I stated it. Throughout my essay, I had many complications in trying to get my point across due to the fact that I had trouble understanding the concept of the essay myself.…

One of them would be that being a good writes has much less to do with following the guidelines and more to do with having something you want to say and using your words to get the point across. Especially when reading books like To Kill a Mockingbird or The Book Thief there is alway a message portrayed in the passage with massive amounts of meaning so that the reader can actually learn something from the book. You could write the most elegant paper with exquisite vocabulary but if you are not going to say anything meaningful then no one will end up remembering it. Another important guideline…

William Zinsser wrote about how people use too many words and use over complicated words to sound smart. This is a common problem with many writings is that people will use extra words or fancy sounding words for a number of reasons. A student may add lots of extra words when trying to make a certain page amount or word count on an essay. Someone trying to sound smart, like a doctor or a professor, will add words people don’t use much in today's society that will give them the perception that they are smart. In William Zinsser’s…

Saddler (2012) discusses how to help students write effective sentences through sentence combining exercises. Through these exercises, students can learn how to analyze and combine words and phrases together in creative ways. This can help my students with word choice, conventions, structure and the ideas they need to create strong sentences to support their universal idea. The other strategy that is especially important for my classroom setting is the idea of self-regulated writing strategies as discussed by Graham, MacArthur and Fitzgerald (2013). Using visuals such as graphic organizers can help my students visualize their universal idea and structure their writing to support their universal…

Where the Domino Fell is a book by James S. Olson and Randy Roberts, it speaks on the history of the Vietnam War, which happened from 1945-1995. This war involved the North Vietnam and South Vietnam after the World War II ended. A war that the Vietnam needed a new system apart from that of the French colonial government, which created so much discomfort, from the way they treated people. Hence, a revolution was necessary to them, to make a change and making things better. My aim in this paper is to bring out a general view and opinion of the book, as well as look into Vietnam War, and what went wrong with it.…

William Zinsser illustrates the importance of simplicity that someone should keep in mind while writing an essay. Writer's think using big words will help their essays, but for Zinsser, it is a big no because using this type of words, not means the essay will be better than a writer that uses simplicity through their essays. William Zinsser talks about the secrets to have good writing, which is to have clean components for each sentence. In his essay Zinsser was defending the readers who read writers' work because is not readers fault, not knowing what is going on while reading the work but, is actually the writer's fault for not making certain things clear while writing. With this statement, it relates to the Anne Lamott essay having a shitty draft and revising it at least two times to have the terrific third draft.…

Strategically outlined in William Zinsser's “On Writing Well”, are the key elements that provide a guide for nonfiction writers to perfect their craft. Zinsser emphasises the importance of simplicity when writing in order to free ones work of unnecessary clutter and hold the reader's attention. Many of the concepts discussed by Zinsser are can be seen in James Baldwin's collection of essays entitled Notes of a Native Son, which falls anything short of a boring memoir. Baldwin takes the reader on a journey as he discusses racial matters in American society, his identity as an African American, and critiquing protest novels, movies and America as a whole. The transparency and honesty with which Baldwin writes makes his work exceptional and captivating.…

My English professor made me write a minimum of five pages for an essay and I never wrote over three pages since high school. This course was a challenge for me, but it also taught me the value to writing. The more papers I wrote in college made my views change on writing. Writing became a secondary voice for me, it wasn’t difficult for me to write about what I knew or either what was near and dear to my heart. Although I respect writing, it is still something that I still struggle with till this day.…

"Show, don't tell. " A few years ago, I completed a creative writing seminar at university, and that is the one piece of advice that was burned into my brain. It is so tempting to "tell" readers how to perceive your characters, or how the action of your story is progressing; it is much more difficult to "show" them. The use of adjectives, and adverbs even more so, is intimately linked to the “telling” of a story.…
