William, the Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom (DIKW) model does look promising. Nurses as well as other health care professionals need to be involved in the development, testing and redesign of their electronic medical record and communication systems. Lavin, Harper, & Barr (2015) call out to nurses to become involved and comfortable with the informatics that affect their care documentation and become an active voice at the health information technology (HIT) table. In addition, they encourage “Innovation, including increasing use of big data and eMeasures, will continue to improve patient safety and care quality” (Lavin, Harper & Bar, 2015, Summary and Conclusion). I agree with this view. I have been involved with many initiatives
