In 8th grade i had to give a book talk in front of my class and i did everything in my power to get over it, but nothing worked. In the story The elevator by William Sleator, Martin also did everything to not face his fears of the elevator, the fat lady, and his dad. Martin tried running away from his fears, but nothing worked for him either. The author shows us that Martin’s lack of ability to get over his fears by building suspense with his thoughts and actions. These are all efforts to get over his fears because martin is a coward and is terrified of his dad's opinion, the fat lady, znc the elevator. The first phobia introduced in the story was his fear of the elevator. “He didn't get used to it. He remained tense in the trembling little box, his eyes fixed on the numbers over the door that blinked on and off so haltingly, as if at any moment they might simply give up.” (line 27) When most people ride in an elevator everyday usually they would get used to it, …show more content…
“Not only are you skinny and wea and bad at sports”, his expression seemed to say “but you're also a coward.” After that, Martin forced himself to take the elevator.” (line 22) Most people do not worry about their parents opinion and would just ignore them, but not martin. Martin cares too much but his dad thinks about hm that he forced himself to take the elevator to keep him happy. “When are you going to grow up and act like a man? Are you going to be timid all your life?” He managed not to cry until he got to his room” (line 136) Martin’s dad gets annoyed with his fear of the elevator. He feels as if he is old enough that he should be over them by now. His dad him this in a very impudent way, but i his point of view maybe Martin has been going on and on with this for a while, so his dad is getting irritated. Martin’s dad just wants him to grow up. He thinks ks it is foolish of him to gill be intimidated by all
