First, I will be analyzing a painting created by Frank Bernard Dicksee in 1884. The painting is made of oil and portrays Romeo sitting on Juliet's balcony after their wedding. Juliet is wearing a white dress which represents purity, simplicity, and marriage. Furthermore, Romeo is wearing a red robe which represents love, desire, and passion. Both of these colors suggest that the two characters are happy and in love which is further expressed by the fact that they are kissing. The plot of the graphic novel remains the same as the original, but the details have changed. For example, in the graphic novel the Montagues are robotically enhanced and the Capulets are genetically enhanced. With these enhancements they have dominated the world and the only thing holding each one back is the other one. Another thing that has changed is the language. It isn’t written with the same dialog as the original. It’s more modern and less formal than what Shakespeare used. In conclusion, it’s another spin on the original book that offers a more intriguing story for younger readers.
To sum things up, there are many different artistic representations of Romeo and Juliet and each one tells something a little different about the story.
