Trickery In Twelfth Night

In the play “Twelfth Night” by William Shakespeare, there is a lot of deception and deceivery. Some of it is for necessity, Some for another’s benefit, and even some of it is just for fun. I will be explaining some of the trickery that goes on throughout the play.
Viola most likely deceives the most people by disguising herself as a man, not as a way to manipulate people and get what she wants, but she does it as a way of survival. She originally did it so she could get a job performing and singing in Orsino’s court. But Orsino started taking a liking to Cesario, and started to get her to do his work, like by using Cesario to confess his love to Olivia, because prior to that he only had old men confessing his love, and Viola looked like a young man. Olivia is wealthy noble, and when

As the play goes on Orsino keeps getting Cesario to go back to Olivia to confess his love even more. Olivia is still in love with Cesario and Viola still loves Orsino. Sir Andrew Aguecheek notices that Olivia really likes Cesario, and Sir Andrew gets upset about this, he ends up writing a letter to Cesario about how he challenges her to have a duel to the death. When they first start Sir Andrew thinks Cesario is a good fighter, and Cesario thinks Sir Andrew is too. But in reality neither of them are. Part way through the conflict Antonio comes across this predicament, Cesario accidentally tricks Antonio into thinking she is her twin brother, Sebastian, who happens to look nearly identical. Antonio comes to help Cesario, but shortly after Illyrian guards come by to arrest Antonio for piracy, Antonio still thinks Cesario is Sebastian and asks for his coin purse back, Cesario tells him she has no clue who he is, and offers money to him, He declines and gets taken away by the guards. Cesario leaves shortly after this, and

In William Shakespeare’s tragedy, “Hamlet,” deception is an essential element that is used throughout the play. Hamlet continuously seeks for revenge on the murder of his beloved father, and in search of the truth, he plays a game of deception. He uses the appearances of other people, and the dishonesty throughout the world he lives in, to discover whom actually murdered his father. The acceptance of his inability to find out the certainty behind the murder, by himself, leads him to use a different tactic in order to reach the same result, finding the guilty person. Hamlet’s eagerness for the truth relies on deception because of limitations of his perception of actuality vs. appearance.…

True lovers care about each other, and try to make each other feel better during the toughest times. When one expresses fondness, they do not attempt to be selfish or try to take advantage of the one they love, like what Orsino does. Again, in 5.1, Orsino is trying to take advantage of Olivia, by being greedy. When Orsino finds out Olivia is in love with Viola-Cesario, Orsino says: “Why should I not – had I heart to do it - / Like to th’Egyptian thief at point of death / Kill what I love – a savage jealousy” (5.1.106-08). If Orsino has true affection over Olivia, he would not threaten to kill her just because she is in love with another man.…

The Twelfth Night or What you will is a play written by William Shakespeare in about 1601-02. It is a comedy which focuses around the romantic relationships of the twins Viola and Sebastian and their love interests Orsino and Olivia on the island of Illyria. The play has a comedic twist by including an element of crossdressing, which in turn brings much confusion to the romantic relationships of the characters. The Twelfth Night was written during the renaissance, which was a time of excess; in both the arts, beauty and frivolity. Shakespeare explores these areas of excess in the first monologue of the play by the Duke and throughout the course of the play.…

Deception leading down a destructive path ending in corruption is a primary theme displayed in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Deceit is like quicksand because the more someone sinks into it the more they struggle to get out and getting out of it is the hardest part. The characters around Hamlet sink into the deceit and corruption so quickly that they can no longer act as they normally would. They begin to act irrationally and be completely filled with the lies they tell. One single thing does not cause the deception amongst the characters though.…

Twelfth Night, a play by William Shakespeare, is about a love triangle between Duke Orsino, Viola, and the Countess Olivia where Orsino is trying to woo Olivia, who refuses his advances because she is mourning the death of her brother; Viola is in love with Orsino, but can’t show her affection since she is disguised as a man; and Olivia is in love with Viola disguised as Cesario. After all sorts of different complications getting in between their love for each other, Olivia marries Viola’s brother, Sebastian who was believed to be dead, and Viola and Orsino marry each other. I usually don’t enjoy reading plays, but Twelfth Night is an exception. It is witty, funny, and has a wonderful romantic plot despite its hard-to-follow Shakespearean…

This creates both the effect of twelfth night and induces comedy into the situation, as it creates a ridiculous image of the male actors, all while making fun of aristocratic male figures in particular. This is perhaps why Shakespeare is often spoken of as one of the first feminist writers. Similarly, it’s quite provocative to see that the only person actually able to keep up with the fools wit is Viola, a woman. The juxtaposition of Malvolios inability to interact with the fool in a semi-intellectual manner against Violas obvious ease to keep up with the fools intricate manner of speaking, might be done simply to once again underline the effect of twelfth night and…

Deception is a tool that has been used throughout history to achieve power and political goals. It is used daily by people who desire to alter a situation in their favor, whether it be for good or bad. William Shakespeare wrote the play Much Ado About Nothing in 1599 for Queen Elizabeth I, someone who often interfered in the relationships among her courtiers and attendants. Shakespeare uses this play to comment on deception and how one may go about deceiving someone, by comparing Don Pedro and the Friar’s use of deception with Don John’s, it is clear that he believes deception has a place in society– but only if it is used for a good purpose. Through the contrast of Don Pedro, the Friar, and Leonato’s good intentions and his brother’s machinations…

The Shakespearean literature reference, Shakespeare A to Z, explains how deception can be fatal and put a plan to a standstill. The book says, “The king tells Hamlet that he is being sent to England immediately for his own safety. The king’s entourage escorts Hamlet to the boat, leaving the king to muse on his plot: he is sending letters to the English that threaten war unless they kill Hamlet immediately” (Boyce 235). Hamlet does not know of the kings true intentions to kill him. If this plan would have succeeded, Hamlet would be dead, and the revenge he wanted would never be complete.…

The nature of deception and manipulation can lead to a daunting experience. Many utilize deception as desperation when they feel powerless. Meanwhile, others abuse it to gain overbearing power. Significantly in this scene, Claudius discusses the surveillance of Hamlet and manipulates others as espionages to reveal the truth about his apparent erratic behavior. Several characters in this play are also obligated in order to disperse skepticism or reveal truths.…
