The Taming of the Shrew is a romantic comedy that takes place in Padua, Italy, which was a prominent city-state during the Renaissance. The story revolves around two characters named Katherine and Petruchio who get married in a week’s time. In the play, The Taming of the Shrew by Shakespeare, plot development relies upon the use of comedic devices as the characters all do crazy things, like pretending to be tutors in order to woo a lover, or being absurdly unreasonable in order to tam a hot-tempered wife. Katherine was opposed to this; however, Petruchio had won over the father. As this was happening, Lucentio came clean to Bianca about his true identity and that his servant, Tranio, was doing everything so their marriage could be arranged, to this, Bianca wished him luck. Hortensio, after seeing how Lucentio and Bianca interacted, swore off Bianca and decided to go after a rich widow. Once the week passed, Katherine and Petruchio’s wedding arrived, as did Petruchio in the most ridiculous outfit. He came in riding an old horse and mismatching clothes; Gremio tells of the wedding being a total joke, where Petruchio had punched the pastor who was holding the ceremony. Once the wedding was over, Petruchio took Katherine straight to his house, on their wedding night Petruchio purposefully didn’t let Katherine eat or sleep. He claimed that contradicting everything she said and doing crazy things would make her obey his orders and become docile. Bianca rejected Lucentio’s call, as did Hortensio’s wife; the one who came over was Katherine. This won Petruchio the bet and Shakespeare used an unexpected plot twist. This helped for the plot in order to develop into one of unity and harmony for the ending as everyone realized Petruchio had tamed Katherine and that their match was indeed a peaceful match.
