In an incident regarding Antonio and Bassanio, Antonio states to look at the profuse amount of money lended to Bassanio as an investment, though Antonio also insists that the lent money is solely out of love. In other words, Bassanio views his confusing relationship with Antonio as a matter of love rather than business. Antonio says, “And if it stand, as yourself still do, within the eye of honor, be assured my purse, my person, my extremest means lie all unlocked to your occasions.” (Shakespeare 12) Antonio’s point is that as long as it’s honorable, Bassanio is allowed use all his money and will do his best to help him. Sadly, the relationship between the two men appears to be unequal love. Passionate Antonio is obviously in love with Bassanio. The main plot revolves around Bassanio and Antonio. In the beginning of the Merchant of Venice, Antonio’s friend Bassanio is in need of money. Desperate, Bassanio asks Antonio for a loan in order to win Portia over. Antonio agrees to assist Antonio in finding money. Without this situation, Antonio and Bassanio’s relationship would not be inseparable. Obviously, one can tell that the character’s rely on each other throughout the entire Shakespearean play. For example, Bassano states,”Antonio, I am married to a wife which is as dear to me as life itself. But life itself, my wife, and all the world are not with me esteemed above thy life. I would lose all-ay, sacrifice them all here to this devil-to deliver you.” (Shakespeare 184) This quote expresses how close their relationship is because Bassanio is to give up everything for Antonio.
