Hemingway’s style in A Farewell to Arms uses the iceberg theory. The iceberg theory states that withholding background information about characters gives a story weight and solemnity. This is exemplified in A Farewell to Arms as the readers are not privy to the lives of Frederic Henry and Catherin Barkley before the story. Readers do not learn of Henry’s specific job until Chapter 3, “It’s only the ambulance.” (Hemingway 15). This style is effective as it forces the reader to grasp and read the whole story. This style causes readers to think and use their imagination and gives readers a motivation to continue reading rather than writing multiple paragraphs of backgrounds. Multiple attitudes are conveyed in A Farewell to Arms. Disconnection and ignorance is shown through Frederic Henry when he thinks to himself, “Well, I knew I would not be killed. Not in this war. It did not have anything to do with me. It seemed no more dangerous to me myself than war in the movies.” (Hemingway 31). Depression and the toll that war can take on a person is shown through Rinaldi when he tells Frederic Henry, “This war is killing me, I am very depressed by it.” (Hemingway 146). Rinaldi continues to talk about the war in repetition saying, “This is a terrible war,” and, “This war is terrible,” (Hemingway 147).
