My thesis is that ‘Drama reveals the issues of characters caught in crisis.’
Through the drama of the death of king hamlet, we see through the cracks of crisis the real issues of the main characters.
We see that when Hamlet finds out from his dead father that king Hamlet was murdered by Claudius. Hamlet is unsure whether to commit the crime of killing Claudius or not and battles between his conscience and his honour. Hamlet experiences psychological crisis from not knowing what is the right course of action, as shown by his soliloquy “To be, or not to be," Where he questions whether to commit suicide or commit the act which his conscience disagrees with as said in the line, "Whether tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows …show more content…
She wants to please and obey the men in her life, her father, her brother and Hamlet. * Because of this she was walked over and mistreated by all the men in her life and only at breaking point she states how she felt about her mistreatment by Hamlet and Polonius. We are given evidence of her obedience In act 1 scene 3,
Polonius tells Ophelia “don’t waste your time with Hamlet. Do as I say” Ophelia does as her father says even though she loves Hamlet.
How were Gertrude and Ophelia’s issues similar?
In a society run by men Gertrude and Ophelia’s main concerns were to please the men, and because of this both were obedient, both loved Hamlet and took concern over him and did a lot to protect him by being under the influence of Polonius and Claudius.
So how did the main characters issues result in their deaths?
By Hamlet’s fear of losing the honour of his family, overthrowing his morals, he avenges his father, by killing Claudius which results in the death of Polonius, and Ophelia. From this Hamlet essentially loses some self-honour and is then killed by Laertes for revenge of his father and sister who both lost their lives from Hamlet’s blatant disregard for others while on the quest to protect the honour of his
