Juliet started out only depending on the help and advise of the Nurse and listening to her father. When she met Romeo, she began to fall in love so deeply that she thought for herself, and how she could be with Romeo throughout life. An example of this comes near the end of the play when Juliet is given the poison by Friar Laurence and she says one of many solaces in the play, which for her was essentially saying goodbye. A part of this soliloquy that shows her independence “ My dismal scene I needs must act alone.”(4.3,19). The lead up to Romeo and Juliet having to be separated was Romeo being banished from Verona after killing Juliet’s cousin Tybalt, as an act of revenge for Tybalt’s killing of Romeo’s friend Mercutio. When Romeo fled from Verona this left Juliet alone with Friar Laurence (Romeo’s parental figure) telling her the only way to see him, is if she takes a sleeping poison that makes her seem dead for “ Forty-and-two hours, and then awake from a pleasant sleep.”(4.1,105). These death’s and Romeo fleeing changed the feelings of Juliet who should have been mourning her cousin Tybalt but was more concerned about her love Romeo.
