In Act One Scene IV, there is a debate between Mercutio and Romeo about dreams and love. Mercutio believes that dreams are just a delusion, a figment of imagination. While on the other hand Romeo believes that dreams can be “prophetic.” That dreams can foretell future events. Mercutio treats the subject of dreams, like love. He describes both as a fantasy and nothing but a delusion that will lead you to nothing but lies. This scene is a perfect example on life, how there are idealist and skeptics. Both trying to get their point proven and with this Shakespeare takes both sides, he does not take one or the other.

Our imagination is stronger as a child though, how we have dreams of falling in love with a prince or princess and moving to castle far far away. How we fall in love with people we haven’t met and places we’ve never been to. Romeo is an idealist. His idealism and passion make him a likable character. The only interest he has is love and he goes to the extremes just to prove it. Romeo believes that being in love is the best thing on earth. He believes that it is the best feeling anyone could have. He is in love with the idea of love. There was this boy in middle school, I won’t name his name. I think he was the second person I fell for. I remembered that our friendship was one of a kind, we were like the best of friends you could say, and I guess I fell for him. We would stay up till 3 am talking about our dreams and what we wanted to do with our lives, he was something. In the end, I ended up getting hurt because he didn’t feel the same way I did. I remember that it hurt, looking at him hurt. He told me he hated himself, that how can he like someone if he can’t even like himself. It was like being a chewed up piece of gum and being spit out because of the loss of flavor, then being stepped on multiple of times. Romeo is a hopeless romantic and Mercutio is the definition of a skeptic. In Act One Scene IV, Mercutio gave Romeo a speech on how love is dumb, a delusion and a fantasy. Romeo believed otherwise. I chose to take both sides because they both have the best intentions for the things they say and do and you cannot really blame them. Am I an idealist or a skeptic? I believe I am a little bit of both, I like to see the good in people and I like to think there is someone for everyone. Some people are worth the risks on some levels, even if it means you’ll get hurt in the end. As for being a skeptic, fantasies are delusions and they do make us do stupid things. With that, Mercutio made a great
