Both plays can be seen, to have very distinct configurations, the merchant of Venice is seen as a comedy love play, whereas Romeo and Juliet is seen as a tragic play. Shakespeare explores the feelings of love through various ways such as love at first and presenting love as being never ceasing. When both plays were performed, the Shakespearean audience would think that courtly is better than romantic due to the fact that it is seen that women have more power and in order for the man to win the women’s heart he needs to do something lusty in order for that to happen. Whereas romantic love is seen as inappropriate. However if the plays where to be played in the 21st century, it would have been inconsistent and romantic love would have been the immaculate type.
In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare presents love as pensive and resistant. In act 1 scene 1 Shakespeare uses oxymoron’s to show how spiritless Romeo is, after Rosaline leaving him ‘loving hate’ ‘brawling love’ both verify that Shakespeare is presenting Romeo as a discouraged and reduced person but he is also seen as a perplexed person as the use of the oxymoron’s show that clearly. In the play Romeo and Juliet, the nurse looks after Juliet dearly as one of her own, as in Shakespearean times mothers were too busy for their children and passed that role over to their servants, in this case the nurse. ‘Thou west the prettiest babe that ever I nursed’ this indicates that the nurse is prepared to take on the role of a mother for Juliet and does the job well, which result in praise for Juliet. The word ‘nursed’ signifies that the nurse is someone who put all their hard work and effort in to someone such as a child just as the nowadays mothers
