Live or Let Die
“Good night, good night! Parting is such sweet sorrow / that I shall say good night till it be morrow” (2.2.188-189). One of the biggest hits of all time, Romeo and Juliet is the tale of two star crossed lovers with a forbidden dalliance. Everybody knows the tragedy whether they have read or seen the play or not. Romeo and Juliet has fit in easily to the twentieth century culture, maybe because of how realistic teenage rebellion is to us. However, as the curriculum has insisted on teaching Shakespeare, student’s interest for the play has diminished and diminished. Yes, Shakespeare is one of the most greatest writers of his time, but is it time to let his works die along with him? High school students seem to gripe and groan more and more as Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has continued to be taught. Romeo and Juliet consists of morally wrong themes throughout that will only influence adolescence into rebellion. Besides the fact that the morals are wrong in the play, high school students will not pick up a book and read it all the way through, if in every sentence they are searching on the internet for meanings they simply cannot comprehend.
