Romeo and Juliet Essay: Killed By Love

The tale, Romeo and Juliet, is a tragic love story that takes place in Verona Italy, in which the main protagonists attempts to be together are cruelly destroyed by numerous components. William Shakespeare embellishes four of these many components more than any of the others; Friar Laurence, society, the Lord and Lady of both Montague and Capulet, and the lovers themselves. These factors quickly try to destroy Romeo and Juliet’s love and lead to deep sorrow, for not only the lovers, but for their family and friends.

Even though society influences the parents’ decisions, they are responsible for their actions. The two houses have a rivalry which forbids Romeo from being with Juliet. The lovers then, wanting to be together at any cost, go behind their parents backs and get married secretly. “Come, come with me, and we will make short work; for, by your leaves, you shall not stay alone till holy church incorporate two in one” ( II vi 35-37). Lord Capulet later forces Juliet to marry Paris or to go and leave their house. This causes great conflict between not only Juliet and her parents, but between her, the nurse, Romeo, and Friar Laurence. “Parents deciding a daughter’s future, forced to marry a man she doth not know Romeo spends his last nighttime with her before his banishment hence from ‘ere thrown. Her mother wants him poisoned, laid to rest, her father wants her future ruined, gone. If she doth not obey his command best, he shalt disown thee; banished like a prawn. Now Juliet is off to see Laurence where she shalt find safety from her parents” (Act III, Prologue: A Sonnet). Capulet’s temper and prejudicial assumptions of his daughter’s desires cause great conflict. Even though Romeo and Juliet were affected by many components, such as Friar Laurence, society, and the Lord and Lady of both Montague and Capulet, they in the end took their own lives. As Romeo dies he says, “Here’s to my love! [Drinks] O true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die. [Dies]” (V iii 119-120), then as Juliet finds Romeo dead she proclaims, “...O happy dagger! [Snatching ROMEO 's dagger] This is thy sheath; [Stabs herself] there rust, and let me die. [Falls on ROMEO 's body, and dies]” (V iii 163-168). They chose in the end to kill themselves, over a petty love that had started in such a small period of time. Juliet had Paris wanting her hand in marriage and Romeo was priorly in love with Rosaline, but they chose to kill themselves ending their own fate without much thought. Juliet with her clouded emotions and foolish deciaions and Romeo with his rash love and heavy headedness, are the greatest to blame for their own
