Imagine living in a community with two households that are sworn enemies, where nobody even thinks about getting along. Picture being a member of one of the families and then one day without any warning, falling in love with someone from the opposing blood. In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet live that exact life. A book that is similar to Romeo and Juliet is Origins by Cate Tiernan. The ways the book is related is how the characters meet, how the couples keep their love a secret, and the main characters are born sworn enemies. One way that Origins and Romeo and Juliet are alike is how the characters meet. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet meet at a party hosted by Lord and Lady Capulet. The moment …show more content…
In the beginning of Romeo and Juliet, the Montagues and the Capulets get in a fight and cause a chaos outbreak. Then the Prince interrupts the riot and threatens the families. “If you ever disturb our streets again, your lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace,” (Act 1). When the street go quiet after the announcement of the Prince, Lord and Lady Capulet host a costume party, inviting almost the entire town, including Romeo and his friends. At the party, Tybalt notices Romeo and gets angry with him, causing a ripple in the silence between the families. As Romeo and Juliet strive to keep their love a secret, Tybalt gets more restless and is in need of a fight. But when he approaches Romeo, Romeo refuses making Tybalt even more enraged. When Mercutio, Romeo’s best friend, steps in the fight and gets killed, Romeo goes after revenge. To get his revenge, Romeo kills Tybalt, leaving the town of Verona in distraught. Like Romeo and Juliet, in Origins, Rose and Diarmuid’s relationship bleeds into their villages and other families. Towards the end of the book, when Rose is pregnant with Diarmuid’s child, they are going to get married, but someone stood in their way: Siobhan. Siobhan was a witch in the same coven as Diarmuid, Vykrothe, and they were arranged by their families to get married. When a feud between Rose and Siobhan grows, a Vykrothe arrow strikes Rose’s mother, almost killing her. Filled with rage, Rose looks for a way to get revenge, and she found exactly what she was looking for. “I would add a few poisonous ingredients and a dark spell that would send Siobhan to death’s door. She would not die though she might wish she could. As I doused Ma’s forehead with a cloth, I imagined Siobhan writhing in pain. Oh, I would send her a spell to end her viciousness,” (pg 140) thought Rose as she plotted her revenge to get rid of Siobhan once and
