The Portrayal Of Love In Much Ado About Nothing

The portrayal of love in Much Ado About Nothing is divided among many characters relationships; love is depicted to be a complex series of events starting with an initial honeymoon stage, followed by deception driving the relationship into failure and then giving it strength to regain its allure. In the various relationships within the play, Shakespeare implies a period of love in which both counterparts have faith in the relationship and are full of love for each other, seeing no failure up ahead. Shakespeare uses Hero and Claudio throughout the book as a principal couple, Hero is an ideal wife and Claudio is the most perfect man in Messina. Claudio decides he has been in love with Hero for a long time, and was merely distracted with the …show more content…
Hero and Claudio were once the ideal couple, however their purity is wrecked by a web of deceit built by Don John to punish Claudio for defeating him at war. Don John enlists his partner Conrade to assist him in this master plan to ruin Claudio and Don Pedro, Hero being the collateral damage of the horrible event; beginning with the masquerade ball and causing trouble between Don Pedro and Claudio, Don John brings it all to ruin when he sets the scene of Hero in bed with another man one night and leads Don Pedro and Claudio to see Hero being unfaithful. Although Hero was not unfaithful to Claudio, deceit is just as strong as an action because Claudio denies Hero’s hand in marriage and destroys her reputation putting her into a fake death constructed by the Friar and Leonato. The perfectly harmonious relationship is dramatically destroyed by Don John’s brotherly rivalry. Benedick and Beatrice end their relationship in a less public way, however their relationship ends all the same. Benedick is referenced as a playboy many times in the book, especially when he tells Beatrice she is the only woman to not worship him. Their relationship most likely ended as an effect of Benedick’s unfaithfulness or because Beatrice did not return the love which Benedick felt for her. …show more content…
After the reader endures a terrible tale of Hero and Claudio’s lost love, the final act of deception comes out as an act of reconciliation between two lovers. After much more drama involving the scandal, Claudio discovers Hero’s innocence and goes to Leonato with a heavy heart; he follows Leonato’s instructions to tell all of Messina of the betrayal against Hero, and he pledges to marry a relative of Hero, only to be rewarded when it is Hero who is unveiled at the altar. Claudio felt there was no hope for him and Hero because she was said to have died from the stake of slander by her fiancé and Don Pedro. This celebration is epitomized by the miracle of deception; the same weapon, which ruined the harmony they shared, is now celebrated. The angel of deception, which seems to lurk around Messina, rewards Benedick and Beatrice similarly. Benedick and Beatrice are tricked into leaving heir war of wits and falling back in love, Hero and Margaret trick Beatrice and Claudio tricks Benedick into loving each other. Benedick is better of in love because he trusts Beatrice and is one of the first people to suggest Hero’s innocence, contradicting his previous assumption of all women as cheaters. Benedick and Beatrice are ricked into falling in love, but cannot deny their love is true when love poems come

In modern society, humans have come to judge each other off of superficial characteristics. These superficial characteristics are often a result of facticity, or characteristics people are unable to change about themselves, or at least not easily, as they are born with these qualities. Some of the most common elements that are used to form an opinion about people and serve as a basis for how to interact with them are their gender and socioeconomic status. The idea of identity, such as being a middle class male, shaping the status of a person in society is not only prevalent in reality, but also in literature, films, and theatre. Shakespeare, in his play Much Ado About Nothing, highlights the way both gender identity and socioeconomic identity shape the way people act and the way others interact with them.…

So the relationship betwixt, Benedick, and Beatrice are a smart yet cunning couple, wise yet foolish, old but so young. Now all that is left is Claudio, and Hero their relationship is too young, childish, and immature they had rushed into marriage to quickly, young Claudio is too sensitive when it comes to getting tricked by Don John (The Prince’s Brother), and has slandered his own wife with words of grief and pain. So the ideal couple that I think is Benedick, and Beatrice because they are both ruthless, hard headed, and can be immature or mature at times unlike Claudio, and Hero. Also, that Benedick hasn’t commit or slander his love with words of grief and pain, like…

My chosen theme is loyalty within the play, Much ado about nothing. There is a lack of loyalty between Beatrice and Benedick as we get hints that they used to be a couple in act 2 scene 1 line 245 ‘he lent it me awhile, and i gave him use for it, a double heart for his single one.’ However they we are certain they are no longer a couple because in act 1 scene 1 line 70 Beatrice stated ‘He will hang upon him like a disease.’ This quote that Beatrice used to describe Benedick is a simile. A simile is used to describe two things which are similar or alike in some way, this shows that Beatrice thinks of Benedick as a disease and that he is hard to get rid of.…

Even though Claudio came through and decided he did love Hero, it was the wrong decision to say yes to his proposal because he publicly shamed her! This shows that when Hero actually does decide to speak for herself, she might actually make the wrong decision because she is so used to relying on others for help. Therefore, the differing personality traits between Beatrice and Hero make them character foils because they are the exact opposites, but that is what makes their bond in the play so…

Shakespeare introduces Beatrice as a witty, outspoken woman who often butts heads with Benedick. Though she often jests at Benedick, the craftiness of others and her own inclination eventually leads to her falling in love. The very thought of her loving him is first sparked in her mind when she listens in to Ursula asking Hero, “But are you sure that Benedick loves Beatrice so entirely?” (3.1.37). This presumably leads to her thinking about some unresolved feelings she may have for Benedick, for she says “If thou dost love, my kindness shall incite thee to bind our loves up in a holy band; for others say thou dost deserve, and I believe it better than reportingly” (3.1.113).…

The audience can recall this deception worked from the Friar 's scheme. Claudio now feels sorrow and regret. Shakespeare wants the audience to be conscious of the significance of Claudio’s regret which uncovers the use of deception by Claudio modifying his perspective from the past. He realizes that Don John is the problem and Hero, literally, did nothing nothing wrong. When Benedick confronted Claudio about the whole Hero being “dead” fiasco he said, “You are a villain… you have killed a sweet lady, and her death shall fall heavy on you” (5.1, 140-143).…

Benedick maintains the belief that ‘he will live a bachelor’, although as the play proceeds, his feelings become clear and that he is ‘horribly in love’ with Beatrice. Beatrice and Benedick deceive each other again at the masquerade ball. While Beatrice pretends to not know that she is dancing with Benedick, she begins to insult him by calling him the “prince’s jester” and that “none but libertines delight in him”, all the while Benedick believes that he is deceiving Beatrice into thinking that he is someone else. There is another example of deceit at the masquerade ball involving Don John ‘the Bastard’.…

Similarly to Benedict, Beatrice reveals her negative feelings about men and courtship. During her first meeting with Benedick, she states, “I had rather hear my dog bark at a crow than a man swear he loves me” (129-130). By saying this, she puts herself out of reach for Benedick, hoping that a relationship with him will never happen. It is clear that Beatrice would prefer to have Benedick hate her. Shakespeare establishes her neglecting view on Benedick to show how influential the deception must be to bring her to accepting Benedick’s love.…
