Love is a magical, mysterious, and mesmerizing feeling. It can be felt all around the world in between many different people, even multiple people, but when multiple people become involved, a lot of contradicting reactions can result. In Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, we can see how multiple love triangles bring drama, humor, and terror to the play. All three reactions create clumps of crazy chaos to the script and lure the reader in. We first see the love triangles appear when Hermia’s father, Egeus, promises to marry her to Demetrius even though she is mutually in love with Lysander. First of all, each character is either in love with someone that doesn’t love them back, or their love is being hindered by someone or something else. For instance, Hermia and Lysander’s mutual love is forbidden by her father, which influences the fledgling and vivacious couple to plot a runaway plan together. Adding to the dramatic sense of the play, Hermia and Lysander decide to keep their scheme as secret as possible, but of course they tell Helena that they are running away, so that maybe she can finally have Demetrius all to herself. Without telling her friends, Helena lays out an idea that she will tell Demetrius about Hermia and Lysander’s elopement, and that maybe Demetrius will follow them and try to end it, and she will be right behind him and attempt to achieve his love. Once they all end up in the forest, the drama unfolds as Puck, the fairy, screws up their love lives with his magic flower juice love potion. He accidentally gives the potion to the wrong people at the wrong time and creates utter confusion and pandemonium. Some of these hilarious moments happen at this time with the four Athenian lovers. For example, as Puck goes around and accidentally gives the flower juice love potion to the wrong people, some of the young lovers find themselves being utterly in love with someone different. Lysander and Demetrius both take the fall for Helena, but Helena feels as though they are teasing her or playing a mean joke on her, and she feels saddened by this rude joke she thinks they are pulling because it seems like mockery. Meanwhile, Hermia suddenly feels rejected and jealous when she sees that both Demetrius and Lysander have left her for her friend Helena. Hermia grows so hysterical that she wants to fight Helena, and the boys want to protect her.
