Macbeth Ambition Essay

Through Shakespeare’s work, the audience is introduced to many individual characters and all are extremely unique. In Macbeth, Shakespeare created some of the most interesting individuals out of all of his work. Macbeth is different from most of his dramas. Macbeth has different themes all throughout the play but what stands out the most is ambition. Ambition in Macbeth is the important theme that stays constant. There has been debate on whether or not Macbeth and/or Lady Macbeth was the driving force of the play. Although Macbeth and Lady Macbeths ambitions are both are very much the driving force of the play, Macbeth’s ambition is far more apparent. Macbeth is a play full of emotions, greed, and murder. Brown stated “His soliloquy at the beginning of I.vii ends with his one reference to ambition, as the only ‘spur’ to prick on his intention” (Brown, 15). Brown was referencing when Macbeth was going to commit the murder and at that point, Macbeth was about to do anything to be able to rule and become king. Cusimano, a student at New Orleans stated “Macbeth’s ambition, encouraged by the deceit of the witches, leads Macbeth to killing both Duncan and Banquo” (Cusimano, 53). This supports the fact the Macbeth’s ambition was clearly more powerful and it had to do with the witches giving him that imagination of him becoming king.
