There is very little literature that survives through the centuries. There is even less that survives and is read by the common people and taught in schools. William Shakespeare wrote timeless pieces that have done just that. It is said that, “...he has come to be seen as not only a great English playwright, but the greatest playwright in the English language,” (The Life of William Shakespeare (1564-1616). Although a subjective statement, the facts can not be ignored. William Shakespeare is taught to kids of all ages. His plays are still performed. The Globe Theater he helped create still stands. The article “The Life of William Shakespeare (1564-1616)” refers to the seven years that Shakespeare disappears from historical record, commonly referred to as the “lost years” as, “ incomplete, contradictory, and unreliable.” However, there is a lot of factual knowledge known about him. William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564 to parents John Shakespeare and Mary Arden. Shakespeare was the third of eight children that this couple would go on to have. He was baptized as a Catholic three days later according to tradition. The Shakespeare family was not wealthy- his father tried many trades but eventually fell into heavy debt in the 1580s. Despite their financial status Shakespeare received an education at King’s New School where he was taught Latin, rhetoric, grammar, history, Roman comedy, Greek mythology and Greek. Because of his father’s debt, Shakespeare did not attend University. Instead, he got married to a woman named Anne Hathaway and had his first child, Susanna, in 1583 and went on to have twins, Hamnet and Judith, in 1585. The next seven years are the “lost years” where very little is known about where he was, what he did, or who he was with.
