“For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo” a quote from William Shakespeare from the Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Everyone knows the story of Romeo and Juliet two people in a forbidden love relationship that ended with a terrible consequence of death. However, does everyone know the story of William Shakespeare and his work? Everyone knows Shakespeare as the author of many dramas, poems, and sonnets. However, do we really know if he really wrote all of his sonnets? Could there have been one drama or sonnet he took from someone else? Many scholars question his work and believe he didn’t write everything he is famous for. William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. Scholars don’t really know his exact birthday, however, the only clue they have is the day of his baptism which is on April 26, 1564. According to the Catholic custom, they have to get baptized around their birthday. “The exact date of his birth isn't known, but it is generally celebrated on April 23. We do know that he was baptized on April 26, and it was common practice at the time to have an infant be baptized no later than the first Sunday after birth”. (Folger Shakespeare library, FAQ Shakespeare) The parents of Shakespeare were John and Mary Shakespeare, and he had eight brothers and sister. However, most of Shakespeare siblings died at a really young age due to the sickness and without the proper medication. “William was the oldest surviving child; two infant daughters died before William was born. William's younger siblings were Gilbert (born in 1566), Joan (1569), Anne (1571), Richard (1574) and Edmund (1580). Ann died at the age of eight, but the others lived into their adulthoods”. Each author has something or someone that inspired their stories. So let’s look into a new file of the mysterious Shakespeare called the inspiration of Shakespeare. Scholars say that the two persons that inspired Shakespeare the most were Geoffrey Chaucer and Plutarch. Geoffrey Chaucer is a well know author one of his most famous stories is the Canterbury tales. People say that this author inspired poems written by Shakespeare, for example, he inspired the poem “Queen Mab” in the tragedy Romeo and Juliet. “Shakespeare undoubtedly admired Chaucer works immensely, for he uses several of Chaucer's poems as sources of his plays…the Parliament of Fowles was a source of Mercutio's ‘Queen Mab’ speech in Romeo and Juliet ”. (Shakespeare online, what inspired Shakespeare) And Plutarch was another favorite author of Shakespeare that inspired him to write Julius Caesar. “Shakespeare himself used North's translation of Parallel Lives as the primary source for Antony and Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, Coriolanus, Timon of Athens, and a minor source in several other plays”. (Shakespeare online, what inspired Shakespeare) People argue that not all of Shakespeare writing were written by him and that they were probably “hidden authors”. “Since the 19th century, several candidates for "hidden author" have been proposed, among them Queen Elizabeth, Sir Francis Bacon, and Edward de Vere.
