William Lawrence Honor

Honor is respect given to someone admired. To me, honor means good quality or character. William Lawrence Bragg was born on March 31, 1890 in Adelaide, South Australia. At a very young age, Lawrence Bragg showed an interest in science. At the age of 11, Lawrence attended St. Peter’s College. Lawrence graduated in 1908 at the age of 18, from Adelaide University from studying math, chemistry, and physics. He attended Trinity College in England in 1909, and received a scholarship in math. In 1912, Lawrence took his first class honors in Science. That year, he was very interested in learning about the diffraction of X-Rays by crystals. Lawrence Bragg and his father started researching X-Ray crystallography. While continuing his studies, Lawrence served as technical adviser on sound of the British army in France from 1915 to 1919. Afterwards, from 1919 to 1937, Bragg was a professor of Physics at Victoria of Manchester. In 1921, he married Alice Hopkinson, in which he had 4 children with later on. This law was a big help in the science world. Bragg’s Law refers to the equation - nλ = 2d sinΘ. This equation explains why the cleavage faces of crystals appear to reflect X-Ray beams at certain angles of incidence (Θ, λ). In this equation, the d is the distance between the atomic layers in a crystal, and the variable labda is the wavelength of the incident X-Ray beam, and n is the integer. After putting this law into place, in 1915, Lawrence was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work into this law. This law has been a big help in the Science since it is used to explain the pattern of X-Rays scattered by crystals.
