The example of the “The William James Technique for Competitive Running” and how it reduces running injuries and is also the number one version is similar to the example of the cow path because the cow path is useful and can be helpful to people. The cow path is supposed to be the main road that cows would follow. The path is useful to cows just like the training video is helpful to competitive runners. William James’ theory of development is set in three stages. The first stage is rejected, where everyone goes against the theory (powerful prevailing ideas). The second stage is seen as obvious and the third stage is everyone wants to fake for it. It has to be able to assimilate, validate, corroborate, and verify answers in order to be truthful. The actual truths become relevant when we bring them out of the forgotten corroders of our minds in order for them to be useful. By validating the truth, frustration and contradiction does not occur, thus knowing it is a pragmatic truth. The running technique originally had to impact college coaches to have them enable the technique on their teams of runners. By having a concrete area of runners use the technique, the theory could be branched out to further people and convince the doubters while validating their reasoning. The truth is satisfactory as well because people are using it and recommending the DVD to other runners. Indirect verification are the majority of the truths that we use every day, these are the ones that don’t need to be validated every single time for ourselves. People do not need to rely on the indirect verification for truths however for a truth to be valid someone must be responsible for direct verification, which is the college track coaches in the DVD’s
