William J Harrington's Childhood Field Experience

When I learned about William J Harrington, Jr’s legacy, I realized it would be great to follow in similar footsteps. He was a leading authority on viral induced cancers which is similar to my own interests in hematology-oncology and bone marrow transplant with my background working with viral diseases.
Through a program founded by his father, I did an observership in Hematology/Oncology at Jackson Memorial Hospital. The experience had a profound impact on me, not only I confirmed my passion for this field, but also I noticed the contrast between the care of oncology patients in the US and my home country. Although a plane distance from Miami to Santo Domingo is only 836 miles, the gap in the quality of health care is much longer. For that reason

He returned a few weeks later to get treatment for carcinogenic spotting at Baylor Medical Treatment Facility. In the blink of an eye, he learned that the cancer had spread from his liver to his right lung as well as his abdomen. Typically, with patients managing Alcoholic Liver Disease (ALD), they are not permitted to have a transplant for six months in order to give time for the liver to become strong enough to handle the surgery and heal. “The six month rule has two purposes; namely, allowing the liver a chance to recover in the absence of alcohol, and also observation of the patient to verify that he/she remains alcohol free, with the hope of reducing the risk of relapse” (US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, 2006). Most patients who get the transplant have a 78% chance for a three-year survival.…

Dr. Ratner’s speech was extremely impactful. The story about his daughter really touched home for me. I was in a similar situation with my uncle who was diagnosed and died of AML Leukemia a few years, so I feel like I understood some aspects of his experience with his daughter quite well. I think healthcare or future healthcare provider learn a lot from experiencing a situation similar to what their patients will be. It helps put the healthcare provider in the patient’s shoes.…

Whether it is the news on Fox 5, a children’s show on PBS, or a late night movie on HBO, people tend to form a relationship between the characters on TV and themselves. Sometimes people, when watching fictional shows, get too committed to the characters. They start to compare themselves and treat the characters as real people. Richard Bach, a well-known 70’s American author said, “If you will practice being fictional for a while, you will understand that fictional characters are sometimes more real than people with bodies and heartbeats”. In the animated show “Futurama” that airs on Comedy Central, Philip J. Fry, a 90’s pizza delivery boy, gets frozen and thawed a millennium into the future and experiences many adventures with his strange new…

One of the most remarkable volunteer experiences that I have ever had a chance to participate in was a PULSE program held by Cooper Medical School. This premedical summer program was crucial to my understanding of human health and it afforded me with a totally new perspective on my future career as a physician: a desire to practice in an underserved area because I had a chance to witness the degree to which some citizens are in need of proper medical care and yet most of them have nowhere to go due to the lack of primary care offices in the area. PULSE program was concentrated on service learning as one of the primordial sources in understanding the community in which Cooper Medical School is located and the health trends of its residents. This information could be of much value for physicians who practice in the area because it allows…

During my employment at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Boston I was able to work with a graduate of MCPHS, Kaiming (Kyle) Chiang, MPAS, PA-C. His knowledge and comprehension of his role as well as his eagerness to always do more inspired me. Kyle’s professionalism and confidence led him to be a favorite among several patients; he was able to diagnose with confidence; and was able to communicate with the patients in a way that they would be able to understand. Kyle was always an advocate for MCPHS and as I continued to work with him I was able to see, not only his passion, but the knowledge he gleaned from his time at MCPHS. I knew that MCPHS was not only a school that prepared their students well for the workplace, but also teaches them in a manner where patient education and…
