Over 86% of the students in Dallas ISD are economically disadvantaged, over 90% minorities. It is imperative that educators are able to understand student’s needs and effectively work with our student demographic. Often, many are focused on students’ academics but are not taking into account home life, things they have seen, or their daily stressors. For that reason, I became a counselor, to be someone students can talk to in their time of need; to hone in on those social and emotional aspects which will assist in improving their academics.
Currently, I am pursuing a Doctorate in the area of Community Care and Counseling. My goal is to use my advanced degree to expand student’s area of social and emotional health and to train others in the

Cotton scholarship it will assist me in continuing to be an advocate for my students. This scholarship will not only change my life but it will grow a network of trained counselors and teachers, all whom I have the honor of serving as DISD counselor. I once heard someone ask “Can you read a book and run from a lion at the same time?” This was a profound question. Many of our kids are running from lions the moment they leave school until they return the next day. I believe there are many people who will fight for the academics, fight for children to improve grades; but how many are fighting for the well-being of the whole child? Fighting for them to develop coping skills to face life’s difficulties, fighting for them to have increased self-esteem and reach their highest potential. I fight every day for our students. Teaching the whole child is a charge I am committed to seeing through to fruition at Dallas ISD. This scholarship will allow me to continue my education and research on effectively meeting our student’s needs in Dallas ISD. Ultimately, my goal is to create a community center that partners with Dallas ISD to provide services such as counseling, homework help, art therapy and experiential activities to continue to build the connection between SEL and academics. It’s my hope that Credit Union of Texas will help make my dream a

Despite having the same basic understanding of the world through Christianity and predominantly Calvinism, John Cotton and Jonathan Edwards both depict varied versions of what Luther regards as the spiritual and bodily natures that we, as Christians, exhibit. While John Cotton’s Christian Calling emphasizes our bodily nature as he focuses on the outward acts of faith such as expressing our faith in accordance to our obedience to the Lord’s will, Johnathan Edwards’ opposes this viewpoint in Religious Affections as he depicts a greater emphasis on our spiritual nature through thoroughly experiencing grace in our heart; Luther reconciles that our bodily nature expresses our spiritual nature. Cotton’s emphasizes that our bodily nature is a crucial…
