One of the main messages William Goulding conveys in the Lord of The Flies, is that human beings must have authority, government, and rules in order to maintain a safe environment. It revealed how if people followed their true nature, they will engage in continued destructive conflict with each other. His followers, the sages, realized that acting naturally would lead into self-destruction. The sages made rituals which taught people to be grateful and to respect others in society. These teachings ties into one of his famous quotes, “The nature of man is evil; his goodness is only acquired training(xunzi 3).”Xunzi believed that the reason everyone stays civilized in a society is because of our intelligence. A person’s intelligence can change our selfishness into harmony and beauty, because those two don’t come naturally. Just like in lord of the flies, Xunzi conveys the message that everyone needs rules in order to stay civilized and without them everything would be chaos. In the experiment, one set of people were prisoners and the other were guards. The purpose of this experiment was to investigate how people would act when given no rules in a prison. (Shuttleworth 3). The experiment showed that when taken away from society and civilization, people turn into savages and become more evil as time goes on. In this case, some people were given more power than others, therefore they overused it due to their natural selfish state. The experiment got out of hand and showed the inhuman/dark side of human nature exceptionally quickly. Zimbardo concluded that when given power to do whatever you want, people refer to their specific needs and wants rather than morals and what is right. Similar to the nature in Lord of The flies, the people were all alone given no rules and were expected to do whats right.
