The philosopher, Socrates, believes that mankind is inherently good. He argued that no one desires evil and that no one does wrong willingly or knowingly. Humans are often viewed as inherently evil because of their actions throughout history, events such as the Holocaust and World War II are used as examples to emphasize this. When considering these tragic events, it is often forgotten that those involved are human as well and experience the same emotions an average person would. More often than not those involved in traumatic events such as war experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a mental illness triggered by traumatic events. If mankind is “evil” as others may claim how is it that humans are left traumatized after certain …show more content…
Like Hobbes, William Golding is a firm believer in mankind being inherently evil. Golding’s views are expressed in his novel Lord of the Flies, in which man’s capacity for evil is exemplified through man’s primal nature. As a species man is violent. Humans have used violence throughout history in order to secure resources for themselves, things such as hunting, raiding, and fighting have been consistent throughout time. Mankind’s condition is to resort to violence in all situations. Whether it is something necessary such as hunting for food or something unnecessary like warfare. When violence is man’s primary means to provide for themselves how can one argue the mankind is good? Independent from the conditioning done by society, humanity is inherently evil. Mankind’s immortality is evident though humanity's impulsive, materialistic, and vengeful …show more content…
Man being materialistic has run deep throughout time, from hunting animals for fur to taking advantage of others for money. This greed within man causes the worst of man’s nature to come out. During the 19th century there was a prominent period of time known as the California Gold Rush, a time where the materialistic nature of humans came out and left a trail of destruction wherever they went. After hearing news of gold being found in California over 300,000 people flocked to the Unites States. Being blinded by greed these humans destroyed the land with the chemicals and mines they used while looking for gold, then drove the First Nations off their land. Driving the First Nations off their land wasn’t enough, these people then proceeded to massacre them, take them as slaves, and sell the attractive women. Man’s primal acquisitive nature cannot be so easily repressed, driven by this nature man is willing to go to extremes in order to secure material possessions for themselves. Whether it involves killing, stealing, or destroying, man is easily blinded to what is morally right and wrong under the influence of greed. This remains a trend to this day, one that can be observed in the American tradition known as Black Friday; a day where many promotional sales are offered. Searching for the term Black Friday

-Goldings weave of religious imagery and symbolism in the Lord Of The Flies is heavily imbedded using simon as a religious figure to kinda represent God. I do believe there is redemption with simon being the simon being the savior figure, and that is when he is killed or when there saved from the island or when the conch was smashed. Doing a little research on the garden of Eden I found that the translation is “related to an Aramaic root word meaning "fruitful, well-watered. " This textual evidence does help compare the two islands that is that the boys do find fruit on the island, and not just fruit but food in general and also that the island is well watered because there is water surrounding it and that the use of trees in the book are well…

Do you think that this new environment you are in will impact the course of your life? I do because the people we surround ourselves with, impact our decisions. To start, the bad people we surround ourselves with impact our decisions by influencing us negatively. For example, in the book The Lord of the Flies, Jack, a character in the book, goes from a nice, controlled, British schoolboy, to a terrible, bloodthirsty man, that is obsessed with hunting, and power, which he eventually yields.…

Imagine a centaur, the combination of both a man and a beast who have polar opposite character traits while sharing the same body and symbiotic instincts. The main characters in the Lord of the Flies display both human and animal traits although the human characteristics dominate the animal instincts. In the Journal of General Education, Vol 16, R.C. Townsend proves the belief that William Golding is uncertain of his thesis of the book Lord of the Flies. Golding is unsure about his thesis that humans are no different than beasts. He shows this skepticism through the main characters’ display of unique human attributes such as critical thinking, protection of the young and weak, and manipulation.…

In a book many readers hate cliff hangers and want to know how a book ends. That is the author's point though; to leave a reader pondering and wanting more. In other cases authors tell the readers exactly what happens without any questions unanswered. That also works for many readers. However, in Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the book ends in such a manner that completes the story and gives the reader an acceptable ending through the use of the naval officer and the ship out in the bay.…

Golding, a retiring naval officer, combines his awareness of humanity after World War II and experience with young British schoolboys. Sigmund Freud’s unprecedented psychoanalytic theory on personality divides the human psyche into three processes: the id, ego, and superego and put forth the idea of humanity being solely motivated by both sex and aggression. Golding witnesses firsthand humanity’s inclination for barbarous behaviour and the horrors people commit during World War II reshaped his views on people. William Golding's allegory of the human psyche, Lord of the Flies, how when the moral inhibitions of people have been freed, anyone is capable of committing horrific acts. When Ralph, Jack, and other children have to evacuate Britain because of the ongoing war, their plane malfunction strands them on a tropical island to survive without the aid of adults. In relation to human behavior, William Golding suggests that people follow what the majority of others around them are doing. On page ninety-one of Lord of the Flies, continuing onto page ninety-two (chapter five, Beasts From Water), there is a quote that relates to this idea ,“He gave a wild whoop and leapt down to the pale sand. At once, the platform was full of noise and excitement, scramblings, screams and laughter. The assembly shredded away and become a discursive and random scatter from the palms to the water and away among the beach, beyond night-sight”. This quote was at the point of the chapter where the boys (expect Ralph, Simon and Piggy) follow Jack because they think that it is the popular thing to do.…

In 1923, a man by the name of Sigmund Freud forged the concept that the human psyche had multiple parts or layers, three to be exact. In the Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses psychological allegory to illustrate that people who are exposed to a society with no structure have their true human psyche comes out. This comes in these three forms: Id, Superego, and Ego. In Lord of the Flies, after the group of boys had been stranded on the island for a number of days, certain boys’ true personalities were revealed.…
