In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, an allegory, the boys regress to savagery. The boys’ savage impulses conflict with the rules of society.

As the boys become more uncivilized, everything gets worse and worse. The boys drift away from being civilized. They become savage and lose their minds. “At once the crowd surged after it, poured down the rock, leapt onto the beast, screamed, struck, bit, tore” (Golding 153). The boys become so savage they start doing tribal dances and chant rituals. They get so caught up in the chant, they think Simon is the beast. They kill Simon without even thinking. The boys savagery leads to Simon’s death, and to many other problems in the story, and Jack is at the root of it all.
